Evangelion: 2.0 You Can (Not) Advance: Makinami Mari Illustrious 05

Makinami Mari Illustrious’ designation amongst the Children has yet to be revealed, though she is once referred as “Problem Child”. In the preview of the 3rd Rebuild movie, Mari is seen taking off her glasses while in confinement. She is also shown having a private conversation with an unknown character.

She’s a strange character if you ask me, but undoubtedly very cute. Besides, Sakamoto Maaya is her seiyuu, so how can you not love her? Thanks again to Daniel for sending this in!

Neon Genesis Evangelion: Ayanami Rei 08

Do you ever come across cosplay photos that look so good, you’re no longer sure whether it’s real or fake?

I have several photos in my hard drive that make me do just that. And with all the computer edited cosplays in the Internet, I’m wondering if I should post a new category on Cosplay Holic. Something like the Unknown and Unraveled sections.

Neon Genesis Evangelion: Soryu Asuka Langley 04

Shortly after her mom's suicide, Asuka's Japanese-American father quickly remarries Kyoko’s doctor with whom he was having an affair with. Asuka’s defensiveness quickly repels her new stepmother, but the two eventually learn to tolerate one another while maintaining a cheerful facade of a normal family. Asuka proves to be a child prodigy, earning her university degree while still in her teens and becoming fluent in spoken Japanese.

Now that’s what I call authentic! And the detailing of the plug suit is wonderfully made. Thanks to Trina for sharing this!

Evangelion: 2.0 You Can (Not) Advance: Makinami Mari Illustrious and Ayanami Rei

At the apparent death of Soryu Asuka Langley, Ikari Shiji left NERV as he disapproved of his father’s actions. It was then that the Tenth Angel attacked, forcing Mari to hijack Unit-02 in an attempt to beat the Angel. However, even after she initiated the berserker mode, she was no match for it. Ayanami Rei then piloted Unit-00, but even with both of them working together, the Angel still remained unscathed.

Neon Genesis Evangelion: Ayanami Rei 06

Although Rei is said to be an emotionless character, the latest film known as Evangelion: 2.0 You Can (Not) Advance reveals a more mature Rei with a developed personality. She once attempted to host a dinner party for her fellow pilots and she worked very hard in preparing the food. Her relationship with Ikari Shinji is also shown much more openly than the original series.

Evangelion: 2.0 You Can (Not) Advance: Makinami Mari Illustrious 03

The beginning of the movie immediately reveals Makinami Mari Illustrious to be a pilot of the Provisional Evangelion Unit-05. She was sent to destroy the resuscitated skeleton of the Third Angel in its attack on NERV’s arctic Bethany Base. Mari was able to successfully defeat the Angel by self-destructing her unit,and ejecting at the last minute to avoid her own death.

I guess Evangelion’s 4-part theatrical remake really made an impact on the con goers this year. Thanks again for the contribution, Quince!

Evangelion: 2.0 You Can (Not) Advance: Makinami Mari Illustrious 02

The Provisional Evangelion Unit-05 which Mari pilots drastically differs from previous incarnations of the Eva Unit. It has four mechanical ”legs” that end in wheels and a lack of hands which is replaced with a jousting lance and “claw”. This unique design requires Mari to wear a helmet-like contraption in order to pilot Unit-05. Her plugsuit is also equipped with several attachments that connect to tubing that apparently help her in moving her unit.

So pretty! I really like her choice of setting for this photograph. Thanks to Quince for sending this!

When she was only 4-years-old, Asuka participated in a contact experiment with Unit 02. Although she physically survives the test, Asuka’s mother, Soryu Kyoko Zeppelin became mentally unstable. She believed that a doll was the real Asuka and referred to her daughter as “that girl over there”. As a scientist of Gehirn's German Branch of the Evangelion Project, she was institutionalized, but she eventually committed suicide by hanging herself. Asuka was the one who found her body when she was going to tell her mother that she has been selected to become an Eva Pilot.

A rather sad childhood for Asuka… Cute cosplay anyway! I love her A10 nerve clips and the color of her hair. Thanks to Mina for sending this in!

Evangelion: 2.0 You Can (Not) Advance: Makinami Mari Illustrious

The pilot of the Provisional Evangelion Unit-05, very little is known about Mari, and her designation amongst the other Children has yet to be revealed. She has poor eyesight and is shown to have a difficult time locating her glasses when she dropped them from the collision with Ikari Shinji while parachuting. She also seems to have a fetish for LCL, as she appreciates Shiji's "smell of LCL".

Megane Complex sent this in and tells me this is another photo from Winter Comiket 2009 that I have yet to feature. Honestly, I wouldn't even know which anime she's from if it wasn't for the contributor. Thanks again for the email!
