Mononoke: Kusuriuri 02

A wandering Medicine Seller, the Kusuriuri uses an enchanted sword to slay the “mononoke”, a type of ayakashi or unnatural spirits that linger in the human world. In order to successfully perform the exorcism, the Medicine Seller must find the Katachi (shape), Mokoto (truth), and the Kotowari (reasoning) of the mononoke. Once the sword is unsheathed, he transforms into a demon-like creature.

While his origins are unknown, the Medicine Seller is not entirely human, as he has elf ears and pointy canine teeth. When the Ayakashi asked him his fear, he calmly answers he is afraid that there is no form, truth, or regret at the edge of the world, thus no longer having a reason to exist.
